Jimutavahana's Dayabhaga cover

This is a translation of a 12th-century Sanskrit legal text, with the original text. The Dayabhaga was one of the most important texts in the history of Indian law. The text, fairly late and inspiring little attention, is important because the British elevated it to such prominence in their new colony in the early 19th century. It was known as the authority on inheritance and significant aspects of family law for the eastern Indian region. The case law and scholarship that surround this text have shaped Indian personal law right up to the present day.

Rocher's solid, scholarly approach makes this edition and translation a most valuable contribution. * Bulletin of the School of Oriental & African Studies *
Ludo Rocher, a leading scholar of indology and legal history, has published a new translation of Jimutavahana's Dayabhaga, long awaited by many scholars. * Bulletin of the School of Oriental & African Studies *
That Rocher manages to render discussions into lucid, idiomatic English prose is a testament to his erudition. He should, in short, be commended for the production of a work of profound learning that is universally accessible. * Chicago South Asia Newsletter *
The clarity and crispness of the Sanskrit text is, moreover, a welcome sight for all those who are familiar with the usual condition of the literature on dharmasastra. One hopes that others will follow Rocher's example and grant other major works of Indian legal scholarship similiar dignity. * Chicago South Asia Newsletter *
... the work of careful scholarship and is, for most purposes, as close to a critical edition of the text as is required. * Chicago South Asia Newsletter *
... a welcome arrival for those interested in the history of thought in India. * Chicago South Asia Newsletter *
There is a wealth of information in this volume that lawyers, legal historians and others may indeed find useful, because these principles live on and continue to compete for attention in the socio-legal arena. * Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society *
Rocher's translation reads very well indeed ... An excellent bibliography and a list of quotations from ancient texts are useful assets ... lucid translations and innumerable learned explanations. * Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society *
