This book, based on research carried out at the Academia Sinica over the past 30 years, explains the basic difference between the variable charge soils of tropical and subtropical regions, and the constant charge soils of temperate regions. It focuses on the chemical properties of the variable charge soils - properties which have important bearing on soil management practices, including maximizing soil productivity and combatting soil pollution.
"This book is a compilation of data on the chemical properties of some variable-charge soils that the staff of the Department of Soil Electrochemistry, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing have accumulated during the last 3 decades. . . . Although the chapters were written by different authors, the style of presentation is remarkably uniform, indicating tight editorial control and supervision. The same can be said about the diagrams and figures, whose clarity and quality are an attractive feature of the book. . . . The text is printed on a good quality paper, is easy to read, and contains few typographical errors for its length. . . . [T]he contents seem to be consistent with the overall objective. . . . Because it contains a wealth of data on the electro- and surface-chemical properties of variable-charge soils, libraries serving soil chemists and agronomists in tropical countries would do well to have a copy on their shelves."--Soil Science "This book is a compilation of data on the chemical properties of some variable-charge soils that the staff of the Department of Soil Electrochemistry, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Nanjing have accumulated during the last 3 decades. . . .
