The Injury Fact Book cover

This is a comprehensive but concise reference that documents the nature and importance of the injury problem in the United States. For each of more than sixty causes of injury, data are presented by age, race, sex, geographic area, urban/rural residence, and per capita income. This second edition includes new chapters on injuries related to sports, work, aviation, and large trucks. Also new are many analyses subdivided by four racial groups as well as age and sex, made possible by the use of mortality data from a seven year period. The updated analyses of time trends throughout the book document major reductions in death rates over the past decade. As a statistical compilation, the book offers users a quick reference to valuable detail, much of which would otherwise be inaccessible. It also discusses reasons for many of the extreme differences among groups of people in injury death rates and describes promising avenues to prevention. This accessible, readable reference will be valuable to public health personnel, physicians, epidemiologists, safety planners and policy makers.

From reviews of the first edition: "This book provides an unrivaled source of information for identifying groups of people whose activities, age, income, location, and other characteristics render them especially susceptible to serious injury. For this reason, this work should be on the shelves of every medical school library and should be read by medical students, epidemiologists, sociologists, traumatologists, health-care policy makers, insurers, legislators, and all those who care about our appalling death and morbidity rate from injury."--New England Journal of Medicine "A valuable and convenient source for otherwise scattered data that are important for policy decisions and program designs." --Annals of Internal Medicine From Reviews of the Second Edition "Has been organized successfully to meet the need for broad detailed documentation presented so as to improve understanding of injuries and their prevention.... Very readable both in presentation and analysis, and the data are enlivened by wide use of effective graphs, tables, and US maps.... Recommended to all who care about this important topic." --Joseph Greensher, M.D., Journal of the American Medical Association "Recognizing the universality of work-related injuries and fatalities in American industry, The Injury Fact Book should have reading appeal for both managers and occupational health and safety personnel in today's worksites. The Injury Fact Book would be of extreme value to anyone involved in public health, occupational health and safety, emergency care, injury prevention, and health education. The work is thorough, provides the essence of available knowledge, spotlights the gaps in the data, and offers, in a highly readable and well-illustrated format, today's intelligence concerning injury in the United States." --The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Report "The book, a worthwhile addition for all academic law libraries, is filled with graphs, tables, and computer-generated cross-tabulations of injury data. Every lawyer should acquire a copy of The Injury Fact Book because it contains the most data on injuries and national mortality rates.... Invaluable to both policy makers and law professors. The authors have broken new ground in describing the contours of the injury landscape in this country." --Bimonthly Review of Law Books "When data of this breadth are analyzed by cause, age, sex, race, socioeconomic status, geography, and time, they provide an indispensable source for researchers and library users. The range of topics, from suicide and homicide to firearms, lightning, drowning, poisoning, and cyclists, offers an extremely valuable look at the status of injuries prevalent in the United States today. Extensively researched with a wealth of valuable references, this text is frequently cited by other authors....Information not easily accessed in other sources appears in a highly comprehensible and useable form in The Injury Fact Book. It is therefore highly recommended for all health science reference collections and would be a valuable tool for patient education collections in hospital libraries and consumer health collections in public libraries." --Janet M. Coggan, Medical Reference Services Quarterly hi
