One of the most interesting and unusual new publicatons for the Christmas period is World Carols for Choirs . . . Certainly the editors have done a remarkable job in unearthing suitable authors from around the world. Many, if not nearly all the composers will be unfamiliar names to most who purchase this volume . . . Surprises are frequent in this adventurous collection. One is that although all the contributions are contemporary, there is little or nothing included that reflects anything resembling a modernist approach to compositon. That has not precluded, however, the inclusion of some highly idiomatic music . . . In all, this is a publication that offers a tantalising window onto some very different musical worlds. Christmas comes but once a year, and when it comes it brings. . . And occasionally in the music publishing world it brings good cheer and sometimes, as with this book of carols, very good cheer. There is nothing 'old hat' here in this marvellous collection of carols from various cultures around the world . . . Besides Europe, we have carols from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, USA and Venezuela. I list these countries to illustrate the breadth of this collection.
