Faith and Humility is devoted to articulating the connections between the nature and value of faith and humility. The goal is to understand faith and humility in a way that does not discriminate between religious and mundane contexts, between sacred and secular. It arises from a conviction that these two character traits are important to a flourishing life, and intimately related to each other in such a way that the presence of one demands the presence of the other. In particular, the book defends the claim that each of these virtues provides a necessary, compensating balance to the potential downside of the other virtue. The result of such an inquiry, if that inquiry is successful, will require a re-orienting of discussions surrounding faith, including debates about the relationship between faith and reason.
An important set of contributions to an increasingly lively family of philosophical discussions . . . There is a great deal to learn from this book, about intellectual and moral virtue, about the role of faith and humility in a well-lived life, about the shortcomings of much Christian theology and practice with respect to these traits, and especially -- and somewhat surprisingly -- about philosophical methodology. . . It is rich with epistemology, philosophy of language, virtue theory, and even hermeneutics. An important set of contributions to an increasingly lively family of philosophical discussions . . . * Daniel Speak, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews *
It is excellent and a must-read for anyone working in philosophical theology . . . Whenever Kvanvig writes something, it is worth paying attention; this is because whatever he has to say will be argued carefully. * Jonathan C. Rutledge, Journal of Biblical and Theological Studies *
