A Pity Youth Does Not Last cover

In A Pity Youth Does Not Last, Micheal O'Guiheen reflects on the fleeting nature of youth and culture amidst the backdrop of the Great Blasket Islands.

The only English translation of the reflections by Micheal O'Guiheen, son of Peig Sayers, captures the essence of the last Great Blasket poets and storytellers. In A Pity Youth Does Not Last, O'Guiheen writes with a poignant nostalgia, reflecting on his beloved Great Blasket Island. His poetry paints vivid images of the island's beauty, as he notes, 'The tide spreads a mantle of silk around the Great Blasket Island.' Yet, by 1953, the island faced evacuation, leading to the erosion of its rich cultural traditions.

Unlike his mother's celebratory work, An Old Woman's Reflections, or Maurice O'Sullivan's joyful depiction of youth in Twenty Years A-Growing, O'Guiheen's narrative delves into the somber realities of middle age. He explores themes of mortality and the inevitable fading of a cherished culture, juxtaposing memories of carefree days with the weight of loss. The book captures moments of joy, such as a turf-gathering expedition turning into a carefree rabbit hunt, contrasted with the looming awareness of change.

This first and only English edition of O'Guiheen's heartfelt work is further enriched with translations of his original poetry, previously inaccessible to English-speaking audiences. The Blasket Islands, situated just off Ireland's Dingle Peninsula, were home to about 150 residents whose lives were steeped in a rich oral tradition, preserving their legends and history through storytelling and poetry. A Pity Youth Does Not Last serves as a poignant reminder of a way of life that has now vanished, encapsulating the enduring legacy of the Blasket Islands.
